You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth
You are a Badass at Making Money was the first “self-help” book I’ve ever read. I was anticipating a very cheesy book telling me I’m amazing, but I got much more. Not only did I learn how to take those next steps to get my financial life in order, I learned how to get my overall life headed in the direction I wanted.
The main point of this book is to help you change your mindset about what it means to be rich and what it means to be wealthy. The author, Jen Sincero, makes a lot of really good points, but one of the main points I took away was that to be rich doesn’t mean I’m materialistic, it means I’m able to afford all the things and experiences required to fully experience my most authentic life. I know that sounds very hippy, but when you break it down, having a desire for wealth isn’t greedy, it’s a desire for life and being able to do what brings you joy, whether that be a yacht or some paint brushes.
The second big takeaway I got from this book is that the thoughts, beliefs and emotions we don't consciously reject, we unconsciously accept. Everyone, including myself has unconscious thoughts about money, for me it’s “I’ll never get wealthy because it takes me so long to save up for anything. Things keep popping up, and I’m not disciplined enough”, and I realized that I am not consciously rejecting that idea about myself. Thoughts have so much power and a chapter of the book walks you through how to see those negative thoughts as opportunities to challenge yourself.
The last takeaway is that in order to make money, you have to have unwavering determination and confidence in yourself. One of my favorite nuggets from the book is “if you’ve made a backup plan, you haven’t made a decision” and that was game-changing for me, since I always have a plan B, C, D, E, and F. I learned that I can do what I set my mind to, and I have to have that unwavering belief in myself, and I feel like I do more now than before I started this book.
